  • Noisy fan

    The fan on an external drive has been acting up. (The drive itself is fine and working. Why the fans inside the TiVos themselves don't have this problem is beyond my ken.) Any hints on what my options are in regards to the awful noise? (I was told once that the fans inside the current enclosures are not easy to replace.) Thanks.

    That really depends on the enclosure - we've used a few over the years, and some can be replaced easily while others cannot.

    How old is it? Can you post a picture or email us a picture of the back of the external case?

      It's the tapered case that sits inside a plastic stand. (By the way, that stand needs grippier foam squares to properly hold the external drive.)

        We had several models that look the same, but have a different back panel. Can you post a picture of the back panel?

              Yes - I see it.

              For that model, the fan isn't swappable, unfortunately.

              Have you tried just hitting it with some compressed air?

                We did, to limited effect. Ultimately we turned it off for a couple days, then turned it back on: Amazingly, the rattling disappeared.

                Quick question: Although the fan is not swappable, can the drive itself be fitted with a new case (and thereby a new fan)?

                  Sure - a replacement case can take the drive and keep working seamlessly. Contact us and we can get that set up.
