    all lights blinking

    i woke up on friday the 13th (of course) to find my tivo premier tcd746320 with just the little tivo guy standing there. not booting not doing anything. so i unplugged it for the 20 seconds and plugged it back in . same frozen screen. next unplugged while i showered then same result. then unplugged while i was at work like 9 hours or so. still the same.
    bought a new tivo from the site and then read up on how to fix the one i have. it seemed that the hard drive could be bad (99% chance according to weaknees) so i purchased a new drive and now all i get is blinking lights. no noises indicating a bad power supply or anything. also doesn't seem to be spinning the harddrive. without the harddrive plugged in i get the tivo guy only. with it i get flashing lights.
    the remote doesn't seem to effect the booting i tried the whole unplug and pause etc... and nothing.
    any ideas? i'm not a power supply wiz but could probably replace it if that was something that may actually help.
    i am a little weirded out by the whole more happens without a drive than with one thing.

    thanks for any help. also i only have one connection to the hard drive but it has 2 sets of wires from different spots inside on it.

    Are you sure you ordered a drive for the right model of TiVo? If you can post your order number, that would help.

      did not think it would make a difference , its a hard drive after all. but i got a wd10ezex
      that of course isn't a tivo brand drive but it was significantly less expensive and with more capacity than the smallest one offered on site

        And did you format it for your model of TiVo with the right OS?

          so does that mean it needs to be an av line hard drive? still can get them for about a third of this sites price.
          ah i see it does matter. i guess i just doubled my computers storage.

            i asked the tivo customer service person (a man ) about that and got no real answer. how does that work?
            the formatting thing. i don't think the drive is correct now that i look at the differences in type. but how do i format it to find out?
            in fact one of the gentlemen i was talking to specifically told me that i wouldn't need to format the hard drive that it would do it when it booted,
            well that clearly didn't happen since it won't boot.

              You have to have the TiVo OS for your model unit. A blank drive won't format on its own.

              In part, that's why our kits cost more than bare drives: they aren't bare drives.

                would have been nice to have your customer service people know that. and actually tell people that it will cost an additional 75 - 160 to get the unit running again.
                if i was to ship the tivo to you with an 'ordinary' sata drive is it a guarantee that the tivo will work or is it possible that it would cost more to get it up and running?
                so the question is: if i send the tivo with the not av line drive that i purchased will it work and will the approximately $160 be the cost or could there be more cost involved
                once you look into the failure of the unit?
                also do you sell the os on its own? i can and have formatted many drives over the years.

                  Sorry - did you call us? You said you called TiVo customer service. Is that right? Because we aren't TiVo - we're a third party company that works with TiVo products. And all of our people here know very, very well that a blank drive doesn't work. We don't consider there to be an "additional 75 - 160" involved. Our kits are complete: they include tools, a formatted AV-rated drive, and instructions with pictures.

                  You purchased something elsewhere, and, as best as I can understand, never contact us first.

                  We don't sell the OS on its own.

                  I can't guarantee anything will work until I see it. But based on what you're describing, a proper format of the drive should make the unit work.
