  • Yearly hard drive failures

I got a Tivo Series 3 in March 2009. I replaced the original small drive with a 1TB drive. I've had to replace the drive three times now after encountering the typical pixelation and random freezes of a failing hard drive. I was able to clone and save all recordings the first time, but with the last two replacements I was only able to save the settings and lost all recordings. Do you guys find that this many failures is to be expected? I've tried Seagate and Western Digital drives. Could the Tivo have a problem? I've never liked that fact that you can't put it in a standby mode so that it stops recording/buffering live TV. Seems like that would wear a drive out quickly. Thanks for any thoughts or advice.

That's a lot of failures. You might have a bad power supply causing the problems. See this page:

Also, a UPS can help drives last longer. See this info:

Thanks for the info. The Tivo has always been connected to a UPS. I'm contemplating buying a newer Tivo model in a few months when my annual guide subscription expires. A Series 3 power supply costs almost as much as a Tivo model that I saw on Amazon.

Right - the only reason to replace the power supply would be to preserve lifetime service. If you don't have lifetime, get a Premiere:
