  • tivo premiere not reading external storage

I have a tivo premiere for over a decade now and have the WD external storage. I first noticed this problem about a week or so ago when my tivo was acting funny so I did a reboot and I got the alert that the extender was missing, so I rebooted again and the message went away. Now this week, I went to watch a show and I got an error alert saying that it couldn't play the recording and that I possibly recorded from a channel that I don't receive. So I went back to something I recorded years ago and got the same message. So I decided to reboot the tivo and I now consistently get the external storage missing alert. I did some research and many people said it could be the cable has gone bad so I purchased a new one and I still get the alert. I tried to kickstart using code 54 but it doesn't work. Any ideas on what could be causing this? Is there anyway to check to see if the drive on either has gone bad? My storage was about 90% full (a lot of movies) and I really don't want to remove the external storage as I would remove all the recordings and I have saved an episode of a TLC makeover show that my sister was in.

Most likely, the external drive failed. Drives fail over time. That's just part of their life cycle. And those WD drives that they made for TiVos have no fan in the case, so they build up heat, and they die sooner. I'm willing to be that's what happened here.

Would the drive still be spinning if it fails? Is there anyway to test it? And there's no way of retrieving my shows or to transfer it to a new hard drive? If the external hard drive is bad, what would you recommend to replace it?

Sure - the head can crash and the platters can still spin. Basically no way to get the data in that situation.

We recommend one new larger internal drive:

Your internal must be about 10 years old at this point, so it'll make good sense to swap that out also.
