  • Series 3HD vs Premire (Upgrade or leave TiVo forever)

I have been a TiVo user since series 1 and have mostly loved my TiVo. However, every time TiVo does a software upgrade my Series 3 HD gets slower and slower. Sometimes it takes 60-90 seconds to respond to remote commands (not a problem with remote). My cable provider Brighthouse forces me to use a tuning adapter - which could be adding to the issue.

    My questions:
#1 Most of the forum threads I read suggest buying a new hard drive as a resolution to nearly every ailment. Is this the solution or is it just snake oil?

#2 Is the Premiere a lot faster than the series 3? ~$650 for upgrade and lifetime is a lot of $$. Willing to spend it if the Premiere will give me my old TiVo experience back.

    #3 Other suggestions??

Thanks in advance for your wisdom and advice.

1 - A new drive can really help with speed. If your old drive is having issues, it may have to re-try when it reads data, which definitely introduces a noticeable lag. We see new drives speed up units all the time.

2 - Hardware-wise, yes, in theory. But the OS actually runs a lot slower so far for several reasons, and most people say the experience of a Premiere is actually a lot *slower* than the older HD units. This may change over time, but for now, the interface of the older units, while not HD, is pretty clearly snappier.

3 - If you have lifetime on your Series3, keep it, and get a new drive.
    Been here a long time . . .
