  • Desktop PC HD. Prep to install in Tivo

    Humax TIVO, T-800, Lifetime Subscription

The hard drive in our TIVO died. I have a couple of spare 80GB hard drives that used to be installed in my PC. They test out fine, but have seen Windows XP in their day.

Can anyone give me some guidance on what I need to do oo get them ready for a Tivo OS install? I have read in here somewhere about XP putting it's stamp on a HDD and messing it up for Tivo. Is there a way to get it off? Format with 98?

Thanks in advance for any help.

    Additional Information

These drives both happen to be Western Digital drives. I believe this makes a difference.

You need the TiVo OS for your model. If your drive died, then you don't have a copy. You can send us the drive for us to format:

or you can Google around for InstantCake.

        Hi Michael,

        Thanks for the prompt response.

Actually, I may have a copy. We have an identical T800 in the house. The drive is good, and the unit functions just fine.

I tried the "Backup" using the WeaKnees boot, but couldn't get the restore to function right. I even tried Option #3 from Hinsdale (took all night), but there is a slight difference in the size of the target drive (1/2 GB smaller) and it just wouldn't work. Then I remembered reading about HDs that have been booted with XP, and this HD is such an animal.

My question really falls around getting the HD prepped and/or rid of the XP "signature" or "mark" so I can reattempt a Backup and Restore from my existing Tivo drive to the "new" Target drive.

Both drives are 80GB, but the Western Digital (Target) is just a touch smaller.

Suggestions please? I really would rather spend the money on my children's Christmas than have to buy the OS.

        Thanks again.

It's not the XP issue - you just can't restore to a smaller drive. Maybe buy a larger drive?
