  • Western Digital 1T Jumper Settings?

    Hi,
I upgraded a series 3 HD Tivo with the WD 1T green drive. I jumpered pins 5&6 (1.5 PHY) for the copy over from the old drive. It is working fine now but should I remove the jumper to run it in Tivo?
    Any advice appreciated.
    Jim

No need to change the jumpers on SATA drives.

The drive didn't come with any jumpers, so are you saying remove it after I did the copy over?
Can TiVo series 3 motherboard handle the 3Gb/s transfer rate and or will I notice any difference jumpered at 1.5?
      Thanks,
      Jim

I'm confused. If it didn't come with jumpers, why did you decide to put one on?

I don't think the TiVo can use the increased speed in that drive, nor does it need it.

As I said in my first post I copied the TiVo software from my old drive to my 1T WD new drive. The computer I did that on does not support a 3 gb transfer rate. In order to slow it down I jumpered pins 5 and 6. In doing so it slows the transfer rate to 1.5. My question, which has not yet been answered, is: Does TiVo support a 3.0 gb transfer rate and therfore should I pull the jumper which would increase the transfer rate back up to 3 gb as it came from the factory? So.... I did not increase the speed of the drive, it comes that way, (at a 3 gb transfer rate). I did however slow it down. If your still confused, google "1.5 PHY."

I'm pretty sure it does not support 3GB transfer rates.

So you're saying to put a jumper in even though it did not come with any? Now I'm running into a freezing problem and rebooting. Kick Start revealed a Fail 7 on Short test, Conveyance test, and Extended test. Does this sound like a bad drive?

                Sounds like a bad drive.

No, you don't need a jumper. The drive will just fall back to a speed supported by it's host, the TiVo.

A bad drive will be a bad drive with or without the jumper.

If you leave it jumpered for "SATA I", then the drive won't waste any time trying to figure out if the host supports faster than 1.5, and you eliminate the (admittedly miniscule) risk of it getting confused about it, or of the TiVo being confused by it.

Sounds like a good idea unitron, provided the 1.5 jumper doesn't hinder TiVo from peak performance.
Returned the Western Digital 1T green drive. Wondering if a Seagate or something else might work better. Anyone know what model harddrive Weaknees recommends or uses?
