  • swm 8 question

I recently installed a system that had 24 standard def receivers in a rack (cable system) and needed to also feed up to 8 HD receivers to various locations within 200 feet from rack. I used a slm5 dish, brought 4 cables in, ran them all through 4 port (all ports powering) HF splitters, and fed the 2 12 way multiswitches, and also fed a swm8 switch and 8 way splitter for the HD receivers.

My question is: Could I have run the 4 cables directly to the swm8, then used the legacy outputs to feed the multiswitches in the rack? Are there 4 legacy outputs, or can I split them to feed 2 multiswitches? Only require sat 101 in the rack, but everything else to the HD receivers.

My method seemed a little complicated, with all the splitters. Wondering if there was a better way.

    Thanks for any suggestions.

Using the splitters is not the best way. You can feed your standard def multiswitch through the legacy port of the SWMs, but a SWM8 has only 3 legacy ports. You'd have to get a SWM16 to get 4 legacy ports.

Thanks, Jeff. Could I split two of the legacy ports, one being 13 v and the other being 18 volts to feed the two standard multiswitches?

Also I was shipped a "stacker" which I did not use, and wondered where it fit into the whole equation.

You can do that, but I don't recommend it. A lot of dB loss with splitters.

        I don't think a stacker helps you.

Thanks, Jeff. Will make sure I use a swm16 next time we do this.
