  • What's up with Series 2 DT?

A couple of months ago I saw a post on FatWallet that TiVO had refurbed Series 2s (I think 649080) for $29. I was thinking of some reasons I'd want one but didn't pursue it.

Today I wondered what the current price was and found they're not listed at all. Obviously there's not a lot of demand but I still like them. Can't even find any discussion of them in some of the TiVo forums.

Here's the question I was trying to pursue: if I either find a 649080 that's never been activated, or I let the subscription on mine lapse, will it still play back content that's on its HD? And if yes, will it transfer content from other TiVos on the LAN? Or does it require an active subscription just to play what it already has?

Also, if I had to get a newer machine, it appears the only thing they offer now is Premiere. What if I can't use a Cablecard (which is the case)? Can it sitout with a Cablecard, downstream of the cable company's box? Is there any way it will work with analog cable?

I see weaknees offers the 649080 for the traditional retail price of $149. I'm not ruling that out, but I have 3 S2s already so I'm not sure how much more I can justify putting into this solution (though if that's what it takes, I'd have no hesitation ordering from WK).

    Thanks!

Nope - no subscription = no playback on these models.

The Premiere Series4 requires a CableCARD for digital cable channels. It can't control a cable box.

We do still have stock of brand new TCD649080 models:
