  • Premier XL - bad initial hard drive

I purchased a new Premier about a month ago - I was having the same problems most people were having - lockups, slow menus, menu freeze - then it went to perdiodic freezes during playback then periodic reboots - now I can barely playback 30 minutes before a reboot.

I have run kick start 54 test

short test pass, long test pass - overnight test failed with SMART error - twice in a row - not much more than 30 minutes into the test

So my assume is I got a bad hard drive in a new unit?

So - do I attempt to get warranty from Tivo - which would mean shipping unit back - hassle or should I just go with the hard drive upgrade to 2TB - something I had considered doing down the road when the drive failed (oh, bless the fates)
If I get a new unit I may well have to pay Verizon 50 bucks to input the cablecard (a crime)

I had heard there may be other hardware problems - if I swap out the hard drive I will void the warranty - are there actual hardware problems with the xl or is it mostly hard drives and software.....

also, I thought there was supposed to be a cute intro graphic on the premier - all I get is the tivo guy sliding into the picture - not the intro that I saw on the web somewhere that was supposedly for this new model - does this mean anything?

I ordered directly from Tivo - did not preorder -bought approximately a month after release

    thanks

First, yes, if you change out the hard drive, you do void the warranty.

Next, while we've seen software issues on these units, we really haven't seen a bad run of hard drives in them. So I don't think this is an endemic problem.

To get the cute intro, press TiVo - 0 anytime!

We'd recommend a new big drive because that's what we're all about - lots of recording capacity!
    Been here a long time . . .
