  • Replacing second drive

I bought a WeaKnees upgrade kit for my Series 2 a while back which added a new second drive. That drive (Seagate 500 Gb) worked fine but eventually failed, so I bought a new drive (WD 1 Tb) and figured I could just take out the old drive and put the new one in.

    Did I figure wrong?

The TiVo doesn't see the new drive. I thought maybe it was formatting the new drive, as the drive light blinks in a random fashion, but it's been three hours now and it still blinks.

All my settings are on the first drive and the TiVo is working fine, just not (yet) seeing the second drive.

    Any advice?

Blank drives just don't work in TiVos.

We can get the two drives working together - see this page:

Can I marry the drives on a Mac?

Can I perform the marriage ceremony on a Mac? I've searched but have mostly found old or incomplete information about doing this for a Series 2 machine.

Nope - there are no utilities for a Mac. There were some in the early days of upgrading TiVos, but none that would do this.

              Formatted drive doesn't work

I got my formatted drive back today from Weaknees, put it in the TiVo but it still shows just "up to 80 hours".

The green drive power light is on, and the red light blinks randomly, but the TiVo apparently doesn't see it.

              What to do?

I'm not exactly sure what you ordered and what you sent, but it sounds like there's a problem. Email all of the details to [email protected] and we'll get it straightened out.

                  Solved

Just to complete this thread, the problem was that I was expecting my original "A" drive to see the newly-formatted "B" drive. When I added my original "B" drive some time ago, the process changed the "A" drive in such a way that it cannot see a different "B" drive without it too being re-formatted.

So if I had been adding this new drive as the first "B" drive ever in this TiVo it would have worked with both "A" and "B" drives just fine.

I do not miss the original 160 GB drive as I now have a 1 TB drive as my only drive. Even at Best Quality it stores tons of shows. The only drawback is that I lost my shows and Season Passes, but it took just a little while to re-enter my Passes.

It sure would be nice if the TiVo was able to save its Season Passes somewhere so they could be easily restored. (I understand this feature is frequently requested.)
