  • Replacing Hard Drive

My TIVO is a "Series 2 DT Digital Video Recorder". I have checked and it contains a standard ATA Hard Drive.

I want to replace the Hard Drive. Does the new Hard Drive need to be formatted before I install it? Does it need any specific data files (i.e. boot section)?

Yes, it needs the entire TiVo OS.

We have pre-formatted drives (as well as tools, etc.) as part of our kits here:

    Or, for DIY instructions:

I have checked out the DIY instructions. My original TIVO hard drive is corrupted and my new hard drive is virgin.

I get the impression that the Hinsdale DIY software requires that you first make a backup of a good working TIVO drive. Then you copy this backup to the new drive.

So my question is this: Will the Hinsdale DIY software allow me to create a hard drive that will work without already having a good TIVO hard drive?

Nope - you'd need to send us the drive if you don't have a good copy of the OS.
