  • Tivo HD crashes on Netflix play?

Recently my Tivo HD with an upgraded 1TB HD started to crash when I try to watch Netflix. It pulls up the list of movies fine, but when I try to play the movie, the information bar comes up, but then all I get is a gray screen. I tried leaving it for a while, but still nothing happens. Then when I hit the back arrow, or Live TV, I still get the gray screen and after that, the Tivo won't register any buttons from the remote and after another 5 mins, it reboots.
When I push the Tivo central button, I get the menu screens with a gray background. I can either go through the menus and reboot it manually, or just wait 5 mins for it to reboot itself.

I find it very weird that this is happening. It plays youtube videos with no problems. I also tried the free VOD and it gives me a playback error, the video is incompatible and tivo cannot decode it.

I went through all the kickstart 57, 58, 52 to see if it's the Harddrive problem, but the HD passed all the smart tests.

I think it's a firmware issue because this new problem started on like 4/3.

    Can anyone help?

My guess is that it's really a hard drive problem, and that the hard drive issue happens to be in the Netflix buffer space. So the SMART tests wouldn't necessarily catch it.

Is the drive under our warranty still?

I purchased the TIVO from a 3rd party who upgraded it himself I guess. So I doubt it went through you guys. Is there any other way for me to test out the hard drive theory? Can I erase or reformat the harddrive using any of the kickstarts?
I know newegg has the 5400rpm Samsung 1TB hd for $70 right now. All I gotta do is get some torx screwdrivers.

Well, you need to be able to format the new drive also, and that may be a problem if your current OS is corrupt at all.

Also, problems like this can often be traced to using non-AV drives, and that Samsung drive sounds like another non-AV drive.

Thanks for the tip. Then I would say the Western Digital 1 TB AV-GP SATA AV Hard Drive WD10EVDS would be a good replacement for $90 from Amazon.

If I have the image from the original Tivo drive, not the upgraded one that's in the Tivo now, could I just use winMFS to restore it?
Also, what I don't understand is if the OS is corrupt, wouldn't putting it into kickstart 52(?), which forces it to reinstall the software solve this issue?
Does installing a fresh HD, either a kit from WK or preparing an OEM drive, get rid of the Cablecard association? Do I have to reset up the cablecard?

What services can WK offer me in this instance? It seems that the flat repair service may not solve the netflix buffer issue.

We don't have a flat fee repair option for this TiVo model - it's one of the few.

Yes, that's a better drive choice.

You will likely lose your CableCARD link when you do any of these things. But setting it up again isn't too tough these days.

            WinMFS should do the trick.

I've been having shutdown issues, too. I've posted them in another forum. However, I noticed that my TivoHD DOES shut down when I play certain Netflix shows. There may be many other reasons that this happens, but this forum heading caught my eye. I've been attributing the shutdowns to something else, but the last ones occurred while I was trying to watch an old show that was streaming on Netflix. It attempted to reboot twice, then gave up. I'm having a shutdown problem that is NOT related to Netflix, but I definitely noticed more frequent shutting down when I tried to watch a certain old sitcom through Netfli.

I'd suggest you try a wired connection just to see if that helps the problem, even if it's a temporary test.

My problem fixed itself and I have no idea why. I didn't do anything and just let it go for a week or so. Very weird.

My HD Tivo is crashing every time I start a Netflix selection. It goes to Netflix. Lets me see what choices I have in the cue, then crashes 5 seconds into the show. My Tivo is NOT modified in any way. Any suggestions?

Netflix does seem to have intermittent problems with TiVos, but Netflix definitely fixes them. I'd just wait a day and try again.
