  • Humax DRT400 Freezing issue

I have a 4-5 year old DRT400. It has always had an issue with freezing up after playing recording for a long duration, 2-4 hours. The issue seemed to be overheating of the unit. I combated that by running two "puck" fans on the unit during longer play periods, and promptly forgot the issue, until the next long play period. Also, recently the Telephone modem went bad. This was solved by installing a TIVO wireless adapter. Since that time, I have been experiencing system freeze more often. Only after 10-15 minutes of playing a recording. I turned on the two puck fans again to see if overheating was the issue and it seemed to combat the problem. Any recommendations as to what the problem might be? I have read other forum posts and never saw one that had these exact symptoms.

    Thanks,
    Kirby

Have you run a kickstart 54 drive test? See:

    TiVo Kickstart Codes

First, I appreciate the quick feedback. Thanks!

I had not tried this step....yet.

I have since tried 5 times, but was unable to get it to go into the HD test menu.

I waited until the two yellow lights switched to one red then entered the code, immediately, then waited a second, then 2, then 3, then immediately again, to no avail.

The most activity I got out of the unit was for it to reboot, then "surge" 3x, then go back into "powering up" mode with both the HDD and the DVD lights on, but still no menu.

Please let me know if I am doing something incorrectly.

      Thanks,
      Kirby

Did you see the specific instructions for DVD burner TiVos?

        Does the unit still boot?
        Been here a long time . . .

Yup, saw the DVD instructions. I rebooted, and saw both lights come on as yellow, then it went to the single red light on the right hand "DVD" side, then I entered the 54 code. Still nothing happens, save for the machine either "surging" a few times, only sometimes, then it just reboots or it just reboots.

It now seems to be in a constant mode to where it is just continually trying to power up. I unplugged it for a while and then powered it back up with the wireless adapter unplugged and turned on the puck fans to see if it possibly some sort of overheat issue, although the unit doesn't seem warm/hot to the touch. Lo and behold the unit stopped it endless "reboot" cycle and quickly rebooted and I was able to play a recording. I am gonna keep the fans on for a while to see if it helps prevent the unit from "rebooting" on its own. If it is an overheat issue, any normal root causes for such an issue?

          Thanks again,
          Kirby

You can always monitor the temperature in the system information screen, where there is a temperature reading. Typically, the TiVo will shut itself down if it gets too hot.

Temp is normal. I really think the issue is the Tivo wireless adapter. I turned off the fans and had the wireless adapter unplugged it worked fine for a few days. I plugged the wireless connector back in and the device powered down on its own and didn't complete the recording of two programs. I have now unplugged the wireless adapter again to see what happens. This only happened periodically before when I would run the unit for 3-4 hours at a time, and was able to combat using the fans. I will let you know, what happens. Any previous experience with the wireless adapter causing an issue. I seem to recall another post with the same issue:

any further experience with this issue.

              Thanks,
              Kirby

We can fix motherboards on these, if that's the problem. That fix would generally only be worthwhile if the unit has lifetime service:
