Series 3 Tivo with a Standard Def Signal

I was going to get a Tivo for someone, they dont have HD at this point but it seems better to get a Series 3 unit. Also wanted to use the cable card option.
Can you use a Series 3 unit with a standard def signal?
They have Fios as their Provider.

Yes, you can output SD from an HD TiVo.

Are the cable cards HD only or can you get SD cards?
I read in the FAQ that you can use it wothout cablecards but would like the dual channel record if it is possible.

There is only one type of CableCARD; you'd have to talk to Verizon to see if you need one if you are only interested in SD content.
