    HD Tivo - single fast forward is slow sometimes

    I've searched and searched and couldn't find anyone else reporting this problem...

    Sometimes when I'm fast forwarding as "single" FF, the program does not speed up at all. It just continues at regular speed. Sometimes, I can see the program stuttering - that is, it occasionally goes at FF speed, but then goes back to regular speed - stuttering back and forth between the two.

    This is most noticeable, maybe because it is the only time I use single FF, when I'm trying to watch football. I like to FF between the plays. I can't use double FF, because I always end up seeing what's happened in the play by the time I hit play to slow it down

    This seems to happen mostly when I'm recording the game while I'm watching the earlier part of the same game.

    Has anyone else seen this behavior?

    That sounds like a failing hard drive, but have you tried just rebooting the unit?

      Thanks for the reply. I have rebooted the unit recently (to get my To Do list to show up on the Tivo website) and I still get the not-really-fast-forwarding problem sometimes.

      Would there be any other early signs of a failing hard drive?

        Yup - it could be. If that's the case, you should see the problems develop further.

          I'm actually starting to think that this is somehow, someway, related to football. I cannot reproduce the behavior with ANY other content, even other sports. I tried half a dozen other shows from my Now Playing list and also tried rewinding and then fast-forwarding other shows that weren't recorded. I was not able to reproduce this behavior. But with any NFL game that I've tried (haven't tried college!) I get the slow-single-fast-forward issue very, very consistently.

          I imagine it could have to do with the "density" of action in a football game, but I would think other sports have the same issue. Also, it happens even when I'm trying to FF through a commentator standing on the sideline.

          Very, very strange.

            Just found this...

            Bottom line is that it has to do with a) how Tivo implements 1xFF and b) how a particular TV show is compressed and broadcast. Apparently, there is certain "meta data" that Tivo uses to implement 1xFF and some shows or stations may not include this meta data.

            So, it looks like I'm out of luck for 1xFF for football until Tivo decides to completely change the way it does 1xFF.

            The bright side? My hard drive probably isn't failing!
