Today, TIVO tech support told me that my Series 1 could be repaired free of charge by WeaKnees since it has a lifetime warranty. I haven't found any reference to this - is it true? Thanks.

I think you misunderstood TiVo, or they miscommunicated the facts. First of all, you don't have a lifetime warranty. You probably have lifetime TIVO SERVICE. Second, we can repair your unit and you won't lose your lifetime TiVo service, but the repair is not free. See:
