I have a Tivo Series 2 with a lifetime subscription. The antenna, TiVo and TV are in the basement, and the reception varies from marginal to acceptable, and I think going to digital would help. Besides, there's the upcoming conversion to digital to consider. I live in Portland, Oregon, which seems to be well covered with digital broadcasts.
The cost of upgrading to a Series 3 is pretty steep so I've been looking into alternatives. One idea I came up with is to use an external DTV tuner such as the Samsung DTB-H260F, with the tuner configured for a SD television. I know this seems a bit odd, but my thoughts are that I'd get the much improved reception of the digital signal and the on-going benefits of the TiVo.
What I'm curious about is if the TiVo can control the Samsung tuner with the TiVo "IR Control Cable". Has anyone used this setup? If not, is there a setup menu to configure the codes output by the IR Control Cable to match the codes used by the tuner?
For reference, the Samsung tuner is this one:
