S3 worked perfectly alone for 1 yr, and then perfectly with "Tivo Verified" WD E-SATA for 2 yrs. Now freezing during playback. I tried to do the Kickstart 54 code test, but TIVO just reboots as if I didn't do anything. All four lights stay lit for about a minute, then the amber light comes on, but only for a second. Then pushing "54" doesn't seem to do anything. Tips to get to the test, or to fix problem, would be greatly appreciated!

Sounds like your internal drive might have died.
Have you tried disconnecting the external to see if you get anything different?
We'd recommend a new internal drive - just know that if you swap the internal with anything but a 250, it won't see your external. But getting a larger internal and just not re-using the external makes the most sense.
