Toshiba SD-H400 stuck on "Preparing"

I have a Toshiba SD-H400 that was experiencing dial in problems. I added a Weaknees external modem. Now it goes through the Guided Set Up all the way until the Getting Program Info screen where it stops on the Preparing stage and goes no further.

Now what?

That's almost definitely a hard drive problem. A "replace" kit for your model should fix the problem:
