  • Hard drive vs. mainboard failure, how to diagnose?

I have a Series 2 TiVo 24004A. I've replaced the hard drives a couple times, but currently have dual 200 Gb drives in the system.

A few months ago, it began periodically locking up. To resolve the lock-up, the only thing I've been able to figure out that worked was powering down and then a minute later, powering back on.

Sadly, now even this has failed. At the moment a new and odd message is being displayed, which says,

The DVR has detected a serious problem and is attempting to fix it.

This will take about three hours.

PLEASE DO NOT UNPLUG OR RESTART THE DVR!

It goes on from there, but that's the gist of it.

I'm trying to figure out if I should once again upgrade my hard drives or whether this is a more serious mainboard failure. Other than replacing the hard drives, is there any way to diagnose this issue?

Thanks for any assistance you can offer...

That's almost definitely a hard drive problem. A "replace" kit for your model should fix the problem:

      My problem is different...

      I have a Phillips HDR212 series 1 I got from SurplusComputers.com for $9.99.
I installed 2 40Gb Maxtor's after setting up with Instantcake (and an extra bracket from Weaknees - thanks guys!)
Everything seems to work but the video looks horrible! (looks like a 24bit video being replayed at 8bits - extreme banding and limited colors.)
The menu overlays look OK (they're only 2 colors or dont go thru the compressor.

Its hooked up thru cable (tried ALL the connections... RCA, S-Vid, RF) all the same..)

Could this be hard drive related or do I have a bad Motherboard?

Sounds like a bad motherboard. I'd talk to the place where you bought the HDR212.

I bought 2 tivo hd off ebay. They were both as is. The first one was the hdd as suspected, but the other shuts off after about 30 min. I swapped the hdd and tried the power supply off the unit that works. Now I have read that with the ide models you could pull the ied cable to see if the hdd spins to diagnose the motherboard. Does this work with the sata units as well?

Nope - doesn't help for SATA.

What happened when you swapped power supplies?
