  • Tivo HD Stuck in "Powering up" mode

My 9 month old Tivo HD is stuck in the "powering up" mode. I turned on the TV Friday evening and it was paused on a program we had not been watching previously. I unpaused it and proceeded to watch a couple hours of Tivo'd programing. It was acting kind of funny....freezing up a few times, the menu's were slow to change etc. After a couple hours is spontaneousley rebooted and never got past the "powering up" mode. It appears it's rebooting for about a minute or so and then the tv screen goes blank and it again shows "powering up" etc...It will do this endlessly.

I'm thinking it needs a new hard drive ??? This is our fourth tivo (three series 2 units and this 1 Tivo HD unit and never had trouble with the series 2 units....but this HD unit has been doggy from the start. It would freeze up and pixelate and the changing between the menues was always doggy and slow.

Anyway....before I order any parts I just wanted to see if anyone had an opinion as to what I should do. As I mentioned, from reading all the forum posts here it sure sounds like a bad Hard Drive. I've opened up the unit and nothing in the power supply looks bad....although looks don't always tell the entire story. When it's (Tivo) rebooting the hard drive makes very little noise....doesn't really sound anything like when my computer is booting and the hard drive is making the normal noises that hard drives make.

I called Tivo for warranty repair and they want to charge me $49.00 to send me a "refurbished" unit. That irked me. It's under warranty but you not only want to charge me 49 bucks....but I get someone elses problem unit that you've "refurbished". I may get someone elses 3 year old unit that was in a dusty dirty garage and had beer spilled all over it. Sure, it will work when I get it....but for how long ? Mine is in pristine condition....other than for the current problem I mentioned. So, I'm willing to spend some money to get the unit I currently own working and at the same time increase the capacity of the the hard drive.

    Opinions please :-)

Generally, being stuck on powering up indicates a drive problem. No guarantees, but if you're playing the odds, I'd definitely start by trying a drive.

Thanks for the response Jeff.....I'm going to order the 320 Gig hard drive and we'll see what happens :-)

I miss my Tivo.....and more importantly my wife misses it. She's been all over me like a cheap shirt since Friday night to either fix "her" tivo....or get her a new one....lol.

My life is in your hands now....lol.

I've never had the need to remove the cover of any of my Tivo's before. There really isn't much in there. Looks like swapping out the hard drive should physcially be pretty easy. Hopefully set up will go smoothly and we'll be up and running hours after I receive the new hard drive from WeaKnees.

Thanks again for being here when I needed you !
