  • Series 3 - Is this a power supply issue?

The other night my Series 3 died on us. According to my roommate, just before going out, the video was freezing intermittently and then it finally didn't come back. We tried resetting the unit by unplugging/replugging it back into the power outlet. All the lights in the front of the unit remains on and the fan turns on but we get no video at all.

Is this a power supply issue? Or might this be a hard drive problem? Wanted to make sure before I go purchasing what is needed.

Thanks in advance for your help.

That does sound like a power supply - typically, if the power supply were working, you'd at least get a "welcome, powering up" screen.

Have you tried different video outputs to be sure that no outputs shows even a gray screen?

I'm currently using the HDMI output. I'll check the component output tonight. If this shows a gray screen, does that mean it could be the HDMI output that might be causing the issue?

Sure - but more likely that the power supply or the hard drive is the culprit.

Tell us what you find and we'll go from there.

When i connected the Tivo using the component cables, i got the "Welcome, Poweriing up" Screen with all of the lights in front of the unit still lit up. It just stays on that screen.

Well, that makes it more likely that you have a dead drive, then. The power supply is generally responsible for getting the initial video out; the next steps depend on the drive. It is possible that it's still a power supply that's too weak to spin the drive up, but it's much more likely to be the drive. See the drives here:

Are there anymore tests that I can run to make sure it is the hard drive?

You can try a kickstart 54 and run the SMART tests.

I tried doing the kickstart but I couldn't get it to work. I tried several times but I continued to get the Welcome, powering up screen. I tried pressing the pause button on the remote and tried the pause button on the unit. No go. It still feels like the hard drive is working though. Any suggestions?

When you unplug the unit and plug it in, you get that welcome screen. Follow the kickstart directions to enter the code at the proper time and the test should start. If it doesn't, then you could have a completely dead drive.

When I get to the 'Welcome, powering up' screeen, it doesn't do anything when I press the pause button like the instructions said. It won't even let me get into the kickstart screen. I'm guessing I have a dead hard drive.
