  • Cant restore image to original drive

    Hi,

First some background and an apology for the long post....I was doing some diagnostics between two failing tivo units with multiple hard drives, and have encountered an issue trying to restore an image. Here is what I did. Took backups of images from an DTV R10 and a Hughes SDDVR80. See my sequence of commands below:

    Backup of images:
attached R10 80 GB drive to primary slave
    boot to weakness CD
    mount /dev/hda1 /mnt
    mfsbackup -f 9999-1so /mnt/backup.bak /dev/hdb
    backup reported successful
    shut down
    detach R10 drive
attached DVR80 80 GB drive to primary slave
    boot to weakness CD
    mount /dev/hda1 /mnt
    mfsbackup -f 9999 -1so /mnt/hddvr80.bak /dev/hdb
    backup reported successful
    shut down

    Restore to test SDDVR80:
    detach DVR80 Drive
attach 160GB Drive to primary slave
    boot to weakness CD
    mount /dev/hda1 /mnt
    mfsrestore -s 127 -r 4 -zxpi /mnt/hddvr80.bak /dev/hdb
    Restore successful with expansion reported
shut down, disconnect and insert drive into SDDVR80 Tivo
Tested drive in SDDVR80 ...same problems as before--it's a tuner issue with that unit--get to live TV but always searching for signal or showing pixilization that replays exactly on rewind. So, confirmed not the hard drive in this one.

    Restore to test R10
Attached 80GB drive to primary slave
    boot to weakness CD
    mount /dev/hda1 /mnt
    mfsrestore -s 127 -r 4 -zxpi /mnt/backup.bak /dev/hdb
    restore successful
shut down disconnect and insert drive into R10 Tivo
Boot Tivo and get continuous Powering Up
Repeated the R10 test with ANOTHER 80GB drive and get repeating Powering UP, so this unit has either a power supply or a motherboard issue.

So after confirming all of this, I wanted to get the 160 drive out of the SDDVR80, and return the original 80GB drive there. When I tried to restore the SDDVR image to that 80 GB drive using the same sequence of events described above, I cannot. I get a message "Restore Failed: Backup target not large enough for entire backup by itself" This is the same backup image that restored successfully to the 160GB destination drive, but now will not work when restoring to the 80GB drive that I used to create this backup file!

I can, restore the R10 image to both of my 80 GB drives. The SDDVR image fails with both 80 GB drives even though it was created from one of those 80 GB drives.

I'm at a loss. Please help.

    Thanks,
    Keith

Is one drive a Maxtor and one a Western Digital?

Yes. The 160GB (succesful restore) is a Maxtor quickview, and the two 80GB drives (failing restores) are Western Digital Caviar drives.

WD 80 GB drives are just a bit smaller than Maxtors. So if the image came from a Maxtor 80, it can't go back to a WD 80.

Makes sense, but in my case the image for the SDDVR80 came from the WD80 drive I am trying to restore it to.

It lets me restore the image to the larger Maxtor, but it won't let me restore back to the WD drive that it came from or even to a second 80GB spare drive.

If you restoring back to the 80gb, you have to change the command and leave out the -s 127 and it has to be -zi rather than -zxpi

Thanks Jeff! That worked great. One last thing....do you agree with my assessment of my two Tivo units. To recap....using 3 different hard drives listed in this thread...two 80GB WD drives and the 160GB Maxtor:

A Hughes SDDVR80 shows live TV and recordings with pixilization that can be repeated exactly over and over when I rewind and replay. Same with all 3 drives...that's pretty clearly a problem with one or both tuners on the unit.

A DTV R10 was showing random reboots during live TV and recorded playback. Got worse with time. Using the same 3 drives, the R10 never gets past the Welcome Powering Up. It goes into an endless loop and I have to unplug the unit. Since the Hard drives work in the other unit I can rule them out as the cause. I am thinking this unit has a bad power supply or motherboard. Any thoughts as to which is causing the unit to fail?

As always, you guys are awsome, and your help is priceless.

For the Hughes, yes, sounds like a tuner.

For the R10, are you putting R10 software on the drives? Hughes software won't boot an R10.

Yes. I created an R10 image a while back when I did a drive upgrade to get more recording hours. I used that image on each of the three drives, and each one did the same thing. Get to the Orange Powering Up screen, sits for a couple minutes, flickers to black screen, and then back to Powering Up.

Hard to know, then, if it's a bad image or not, but it sure sounds like one.

Thanks Michael, must have been the image. I restored the original image to one of the 80GB drives, and success! Older version of the TiVo software, but it will get updated after I have it connected for a while.

Thanks for all of your help!
