  • Humax DRT800 Tivo Rebooting after dvd is inserted

DRT800 Humax Series 2 with dvd player/burner, thought my hard drive was bad (unit kept rebooting), took it apart to get a blockbuster dvd out and cleaned it up inside. When i put it back together it was working again, figured that hard drive was on the last days.

Didn't connect the above incident with the dvd i had inserted, until today, since about a week ago I have had the tivo running fine as a record and watch unit, zero issues - but today i stuck a dvd in to watch it (clean and scratch free) and suddenly bam unit went into repeated reboots again!

Took it apart & removed dvd, and again tivo restarted fine (no rebooting), used it for a good hour straight no issues, stuck a different dvd in and again within 15-20 seconds the unit started the reboot cycle.

pain in the rump to take it apart each time to get the disc out (eject is useless and nothing seems to remove the disc beyond me physically removing the drive and using a paperclip).

So if i dont stick a dvd in the unit works great but the moment i stick a dvd in the unit goes into reboot mode until i get that dvd out of the unit.

at first due to the rebooting i thought I needed a hard drive, but now I am not so sure, does this sound like a dvd hardware issue or maybe a tivo software issue (should i totally redo the resetup the tivo)?

Curious if anyone has come across this problem or not, and or what your thoughts are as to what may be wrong here.

I don't think a "clear and delete everything" is going to help, but it won't hurt either (except that you'll lose everything that has been recorded). Probably worth a try since it isn't going to cost you anything (financially).

I think that you might need a new DVD recorder, which we have:

Thanks for the reply on that, just very odd if it is the burner/dvd drive since I have barely used it, recorded maybe 5 discs on it and have watched maybe 2 dozen movies on it (and I bought it new)...

Guessing tho since the unit does work fine when I don't insert a dvd that its not the hard drive, i was just hoping someone might have heard of this happening before and could confirm if a new dvd drive would fix it or not, nothing much special on the drive so i might try that full redo from step one just in case its something weird in the software end of things.

Worst case I have a working tivo just no dvd drive till i can pony up the $$ to replace it, does it have to be a special drive or can I use any eide dvd burner?

It does have to be a very specific drive, with Humax firmware. We have them on our site.

Try the reset, though. That might do the trick.
        Been here a long time . . .
