  • HR10-250 and Local Stations

I have just activated a HR10-250 with a new access card and I already have a Philips 704. The 704 will get the local stations but DirecTV said that they need to upgrade my HR10-250 to a newer DirecTV unit for me to get local access. Does this make sense? If I unplug the Sat Cable from the HR10 and plug it into the 704 everything works like it should and if I plug it back into the HR10 then no local access. I know that available programs depend upon the access card but it does not seem right. They want to upgrade me at "no" cost to me. Do you thing that I should I do it?

Are they talking about HD or SD local programs? You should be able to get the SD locals identically on either unit. Getting HD locals on the HR10 would likely require an over-the-air antenna.

They were talking about SD- they won't even show up on the menu.

This is the first I have heard of this. If you get the locals on the DSR704, you should get them on the HR10. I would suggest calling DIRECTV to tell them you lost your local channels and asking them to re-hit your access card.

I spent an hour on the phone with them and it was like talking to the wall. I'll give it another try. I just wanted to make sure what I felt about if I get them on one receiver then I should get them on the other was correct.

          Thanks

For the SD stations, that's right.

In the HD world, due to the different formats (MPEG2 and MPEG4, and also OTA) there are definitely situations where one unit can get different HD channels than another HD unit.
