hello tivo..ites....i attempted to replace my noise fan...older tivo unit....noise was unbearble....went to local electrocins to try and find a 70 mm box fan...no luck...bought a 60mm...in hopes of me survining until a 70mm could be ordered....the 60mm unit connection was different, so i cut off the old connector and hooked it up to the new fan...thought everyything would be fine.....with box open...i checked the new fan for operation...it didnt spin...put my old fan up to circuit board connectors..it doesnt spin any more either...what did i do to stop the fan from spinning...when i place the connector on the pins....it moves the slightest bit...but never starts to spin....like a minute trickle of power was applied..but thats it....so now what....did i hurt something internal? does it only spin when it gets hot....because it always use to spin...from what i remember...it spun the day i bought it. how do i check if the pins have proper power to them....and no..i wont put my tongue to them to try! PLEASE HELP...before i wake up to a smoking tivo unit!

I cannot say with confidence that it is your motherboard. We sell fans with the proper connectors and don't recommend random fans from local electronics stores. The reasons, among others: (1) You don't know if the random fan will produce enough airflow (not all fans are the same) and (2) the fans may have different power requirements.
If you don't want to spend the $19 on a new TiVo fan, then you can look around for a fan that draws power from the hard drive connector, rather than the motherboard. That might be necessary anyway if your motherboard truly is bad.

See:
http://www.weaknees.com/tivo-fans.php
Those are factory replacements and are optimal for CFM vs noise.
