  • Series 2 with a new drive, cant get past Guided Setup

    Hello everyone,

We have a series 2 that had two drives. One failed so I installed a larger single drive using "Instant Cake". After installing it, I was able to connect to the Tivo service a few times, and download a couple of service updates. Took a few hours. Then it told me to go through Guided Setup as it had no program information (makes sense, new drive).

As it goes thru Guided Setup, it asks me things like "what is on channel 17" etc to make sure it has the info it needs. Then it gets to the point where it says it is going to connect to the Tivo service to download information (about 1/2 way thru the guided setup and after it has already tested the connection), and it reboots right there every time. I have done this four times including unplugging it. Reboots in exactly the same place.

Any thoughts on why it would crash right there each time? Now, when it reboots, I cant get out of Guided Setup to troubleshoot it.

    Thanks,

    dave

If you know you have a good drive, then you likely have a bad motherboard. We can probably fix it, but it's only worth it if you have lifetime service.

The drive is brand new so I assume it is good. Is there a way to break out of Guided Setup so I can connect to the Tivo service and see if there is an update I am missing or something? I *think* this system has lifetime. We have four Tivos, two of which are lifetime. Not sure is this was one of the lifetimes or not. I tried to get to My Tivo but the Manage account site is down till 1:00 pm PST so I cant check the status till then (unless I can break out of Guided setup).

      Thanks for the reply,

      dave

Nope - no way out of Guided Setup except all the way through it.

But you should test the drive, and, if you have another unit of the same model, try it in there and see if you get different results. That should tell you if the problem is the drive or the unit.

I decided to Instant Cake it again and start over. Then i plan to update it a few times before guided setup. I also have another drive I Caked to try in case this one fails.

I was finally able to check - this Tivo is 2.5 years old and does have Lifetime. What would I need to do for repair if the motherboard is bad? You mentioned Weaknees may be able to fix it.

          Thanks,

          dave

Just send us an email with the model number and a brief description of the problem and we'll email back payment instructions. This is a motherboard problem that we are able to fix.

Just as an update. I Instant Caked the 500GB Drive again and started over. Same problem. As soon as it started channel scanning it reboots.

I have another Series 2 for my kids so I took the power supply out of it and put it in this one. Solved the problem. Now I am up and running.

Funny thing is that I took the old power supply from the "bad" Tivo and put it in the kid's Tivo and it is running fine as well. No clue why.

              Thanks again for the suggestions.

              Cheers,

              dave

Pretty strange, but if it works, great.

It may be that the power supply is failing, and it takes enough more juice to power up the larger drive, but time will tell.
