I want to buy one as a stopgap, but will be switching to DTV in a few months.

The HD ones won't work at all with DirecTV. They can't control a DirecTV receiver.
The non-HD ones will definitely continue to work. In fact, they can't even receive the antenna broadcasts that will be discontinued at that point. And after the transition, these units will continue to be able to record from DirecTV, DISH, or cable boxes, or from cable directly.Been here a long time . . . -
