  • FAIL: Moving S1 B Drive to S2 2nd drive

    Short Story

I Have failed to take my B drive from a Series 1 standalone tivo* and put it into a S2 standalone tivo. I order a TwinBreez from Weaknees (WK) with power trip, and installed it into S2 following WK instruction (#79). A drive set to master, B dive set to slave (same way it came in the mail, and in S1). Installed power trip, fan, IDE cable, checked all connection twice and order. Boot up, checked System Information still only 41 hours, same as before. Read long story for more details.

I am thinking it has something to do with having B drive in the S1 first.

    ??????
Should i have to reformat / 0 zero the drive?
    What is the format?
do I need to use MFSLive to do a reformat?

    *S1
    Series 1 tivo
    - standalone / Phillips
    - model: HDR212
    - v. 3....

    *S2
    Series 2 Tivo
    --standalone / TiVo
    --Model: TCD24008A
    --v.9....

    jumper #
    --1 2 3 4
    --: : : :
    --label up

    A drive
    - Factory drive
    -Maxtor fire ball 3
    -ata 133 hdd
    -40gb
    -jumper set factory #2
    -jumper moved to left #1

    B drive
    - ORDERED form weakneees '05-06
    -Maxtor quick view
    -diamond max 6
    -120gb
    - ata 133 hdd
    - jumper set on top pins of 2-3 (set by WK)
    - second boot no jumper
    - installed in S1 '05-06 works fine

    WK - WEAKNEES .com

I have a S1 for 7 years works fine. Found S2 at yard sale, works fine for two weeks. I want to remove my B drive form S1 and install into S2 to be its second drive. The B drive was ordered from weaknees in 05-06, installed in S1 adding 160 hours. Worked fine all theses year with out fail.

I had to move the jumper on the factory drive in the S2 from #2 pins to #1. The label on drive and instruction #79 comforted this. B drive's jumper was not moved when it was installed into S1 and then into S2. Jumpers was on the top row across #2-3. After the first fail I removed the jumper from B drive, and failed once more. The system information screen is only reporting variable 41 hours. All my recordings from the past week still play.

I have booted with case off to hear if the drives were spinning up. I can hear B drive spin up then a few seconds later the A drive spins up. The HD sounds just fine, no odd sounds of a failing HD.

I have check the instruction twice. All wires are firm and the correct order. My guess it has something to do with B drive being used in the S1 first. I think a reformat may work. Or I just got the jumpers wrong.

This is not a jumper issue; you have to program the drive before re-installing it into another TiVo.

point me in the right way

I am a n00b to this but i do not need my hand held. Can you point me in the general direction on how to do this. A few search terms, or a step by step in the forms. I have just learned about MSFlive but I am still reading and getting up to speed.

          joy to fail:

I followed the instruction for adding the HD from the old tivo, Boot cd told me I had extended my hours. But now I am hung on the powering up screen for more the 10min. Should I have reformatted the B hd before doing this

            Nope - that's not necessary.

Most likely, a cable in there isn't secure. Check the IDE connection to the motherboard.

              pebkac error

I went to take a look inside the unit, untill someone could get back to me.

What was the first thing I saw was the power suply cable was not plug into the HD. I was saving it for last.

My Tivo now reports 183 hours.

I will admit I kinda worried about doing this. I feared I would f-up some thing. It was vary simple after reading the steps a few time and checking the commands I had typed in. Every thing was simpler then I planed it to be.

Thank you for your quick reply's and guiding hands.

                New Problem

This is the second time it has happened in 24 hours, TiVo restarts. Once when it was recording, and once when i was just watching something that was recorded. I had both the hard drive in there for over two weeks and this never happened. Unless now that the b drive is in use it is putting a strain on the power supply.

The power supply can handle two drives. Most likely, one drive is bad. Have you tested both in a PC?
