  • TIVO recording on its own

Recently replaced the original HD on my TIVO series 1 with an 80GB Hinsdale hard drive...

installation went OK and TIVO appears to be working normally....except it will change channels and record on its own....there are no indications of scheduled recordings but TIVO will initiate a recording on its own two and three times over a half day or so.....does not appear to have a regular schedule to do the recording and records half hour programs as well as hours of programming....

I can schedule recordings and TIVO acts normally for those events.

Have I missed something in the setup of a new HD??

There's a setting in the preferences for TiVo Suggestions. It comes set to "auto-record" on new drives. Just turn it off and you should be all set.
    Been here a long time . . .

I found the TIVO Suggestion setting and turned off "auto-record".....but now have a Attention 013 message indicating that a 'subscription channel' has not been purchased......can not get rid of it and can not view Live TV.....

How can I 'clear' this error message that I assume was caused by the "auto-record" setting.....

I have sent an email to Hinsdale asking about this problem.....I am at a loss as to why I would get a new HD with the "auto-record" set by default.... given it causes this kind of problem.....so far I have not had a reply.

Would appreciate any info you can give regarding clearing the error message that is preventing me from watching live TV.....

      thanks

TiVo Suggestions is always turned on by default. It is impossible to turn it off until you have set up your TiVo's new hard drive.

I would recommend that you just unplug your unit and plug it back in.

I have unplugged TIVO and it appeared to reboot OK....however now I am getting an "Attention 031" message that indicates "This is a special event not available for purchase...." and I can not remove this message.....it remains and keeps me from viewing Live TV even though I can change channels and initiate a manual recording....but can not view anything other than momentarily seeing the channel info and recording statements...after completeing any operation TIVO returns to the "attention' message and keeps me from viewing Live TV.....

Is there any way of reloading the TIVO software....what does the "restart" option do....I am a little concerned to try that at this point....even though I dont have any recordings to save...I dont want to accidently clear something I can not restore....I am not to keen on messing with the software on the replacement HD.....

          Any ideas??

          Thanks

There is nothing wrong with "clear and delete everything"...it will install a fresh version of the TiVo software.

PROBLEM SOLVED......found the "Attention 031" message was NOT from TIVO but instead was a Dish Receiver message for a advertisement of a Season Pass offer from MLB.....based on an input from Hinsdale suggesting that the message was from my 'cable box' I turned off the Dish receiver and turned it back on.....and there was the display for the "Season Pass".....i stepped thru the advertisement and everything works OK now....

All along I thought I was seeing a TIVO error message and that was why I could not see 'live tv'.....guess I am really dumb when it comes to understanding the TIVO things.....it was my wife's unit and I am absolutely new to it.....guess I have a lot to learn.....and you know I can not ask my wife for directions!

Anyway thanks to all for your help in getting to the bottom of this problem....will try to learn more about TIVO this weekend....but for now I need to watch the baseball game....

              many thanks
              Doc
