  • Series 3 HDMI Issue

Has anyone experienced this problem - I have a Series 3 that was connected via component video directly to a LCD and worked without problems. Moved it recently to another system - connected via HDMI to a Denon 3808 receiver that is connected via HDMI to a Pioneer Plasma. The problem I have experienced, over a period of time (sometimes a day, sometimes two days) the Series 3 will not display anything on screen (no audio either). I have to restart to get it to show anything. While this is happening I have tried to connect the HDMI cable directly to the Pioneer Plasma with no change. I suspect this is an issue with the Series 3 HDMI port. Tivo support just keeps telling me to try disconnecting/reconnecting the HDMI cable (which doesn't help). They say something is worng with the 'HDCP key' not being sent from my TV - I believe directly connecting the cable when the problem is happening disproves that? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We haven't seen that, but if TiVo is right, that makes sense. If the TV doesn't tell the TiVo what type of unit it is (non-recording, essentially) the TiVo will refuse to send it a signal.

Why does a reset solve the problem then? Is that the only time the Tivo/Pioneer handshake will happen successfully? And since it does work a far amount of the time, there must be some sort of 'timeout' period before the handshake has to happen again? If that is the case, whose problem is it - Pioneer's, or Tivo's?

It sounds like when the TV powers up, it isn't telling the HDMI what type of connection it has. So resetting the TiVo makes the TiVo ask again.

So wouldn't you think pulling out the HDMI cable from the back of the Tivo and TV would force them to handshake again? I guess I'm just trying to get down to who I should contact to get this resolved - although Tivo basically says use the component connection. I like the single cable though.

Maybe try a new HDMI cable.

Do you have any other HDMI equipment or another HDMI TV that you can use to narrow this down?

I have tried multiple cables. I do not believe that is the issue. I use a Comcast DVR, Bluray DVD, all connected via HDMI - all without any problems. In fact, when the Tivo issue crops up, I can switch cables with my Comcast DVR and the HDMI cable that was used with the Tivo works fine with the Comcast box, the HDMI cable that was used for the Comcast box has the same no-picture issue when plugged in to the Tivo.

Again, I also tried a brand new cable bypassing the receiver directly to the tv and have the same issue. Feel like it is narrowed down to the Tivo or the tv and some issue with handshake. There does not appear to be any settings for dealing with HDMI HDCP or anything like that.

That does sound like a TiVo issue then. We've really never seen anything like that.

                Is the unit from us?

no, I puchased it from Tivo when it was first released. Tivo does not seem to want to do anything about it. They are blaming the tv.

Maybe pay them to swap it out?

Talked to them about it. For $150 and shipping they will cross ship one to me. Deciding if that is worthwhile or not.

Curiously, I have been testing different scenarios. I seem to have better success if I go to another input first (say, dvd) then manually switch over to Tivo. I previously was using a macro on a universal remote that turned everything on. I have not had the Tivo fail once over the course of the last few days when I've done it that way. Every day or so I try it by just using the macro and 2 out of 3 times it has failed to show video. Still testing and documenting and willpost what I find long-run.

Not sure if it makes life too complicated or not, but you might consider an HDMI-capable receiver in the mix. Beware, they're expense. But the idea is that it might take over the HDCP issues in such as way as to fix the problem.
