  • Tivo Series II - video freezing

I have a Tivo Series II that with an WK capacity upgrade. Lately the live and recorded video started to get corrupted and finally just froze, forcing me to pull the plug. After a reboot, it was OK for a few minutes, then started the same behavior. I tried repeating the Guided setup, but it never gets past the 'Preparing' stage before it downloads the Guide data.

Any ideas what might be the problem? I'm thinking that maybe the added hard drive is getting flaky since it is still able to reboot from the original drive.

Does Weakness do repairs or do I have to check with Tivo? The box has lifetime Tivo service so it might be worth repairing.

At least one of those drives is bad - likely the boot drive. I don't know how old the drives are, but you should probably just get one new "replace" kit from here:

TiVoSeries 2 model TCD540040 not only experiencing "momentary" (up to 20 seconds) freezing, but severe pixellation. The unit is emanating a low volume high-pitch noise as if the drive bearings may be going south. I suspect a drive going bad--perhaps already there.

Should TiVo unit be turned off when TV is turned off to help save wear and tear on drive mechanics? That a drive should fail after one-year seems extremely abnormal--certainly not within AFR or MBTF ratings (for what they're worth).

Thanks in advance for the advice.

We don't recommend ever turning the TiVo off...it isn't necessary and isn't meant to be turned off. After all, if you are away, or if a show you want to record is on at 3am, the TiVo won't turn itself on....and putting it in standby is basically useless.
