  • Bad power supply, clicking, drives no spin up

This post is mainly a "me too" to let people know about this type of failure, and to give an interim solution while waiting for your new power supply.

I have an old 60GB S2 I bought in 2002 that I upgraded to two HDs (added a 120), and last night I powered down to /finally/ replace the HDs with a couple 250s I had lying around.

"Welcome, Powering Up!", click, click, click, ... wow... click, click, click, wow... Nice! I tried the original hard drives and they wouldn't spin up either. I had a theory that the power supply just too weak, but I wanted to test it. If only I had a way to power the hard drives independently... "Eureka!", I thought, as I looked at the gutted computer I had just used to do the mfstools hard drive copy. I just sat it next to the TiVo and ran a longish molex end power cable out to the Y connector in my TiVo, and viola! A 12V love-fest! I partially closed both cases for somewhat proper airflow, and now I wait for my replacement power supply and PowerTrip spin-up stagger thingy.

    Yay for survival skills!
Working...
