  • Checking Hard Drives in PC using Test Software

Somewhere I saw a post of yours linking to software that can be downloaded and booted from our computers with the Tivo hard drives attached to test the quality of the hard drives.

    Western Digital - http://support.wdc.com/download/inde...pid=999&swid=3

    and

    SeaGate - http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/sup...loads/seatools

My questions are these and relating to HR10-250 and HR21 units -

Should I only have the software check the disk health or also repair it ok too?

Wont that destroy the operating system or software on the hard drive since its unix and the bootsoftware is dos or windows?

Can those programs be used to repair a hard drive? And will the hard drive still retain all of its programs and current tivo/directv software after repairing it on a pc?

I guess I cant see how a dos/window based program booting a linux drive and repairing it doesnt mess up the drive before putting it in the receiver. By mess up I mean allow it toretain its program and recordings since its in a linux format and dos/windows doesnt know anything about those files while its fixing the hard drive and moving stuff around to repair it.

Basically, the test is to confirm whether the problems are with the drive or not. If the drive is bad, the repairs generally don't last. They may eliminate those sectors, but once a drive starts failing, it's generally downhill from there.

We recommend that any drive with errors not be used in a TiVo or other DVR.

      Thank you for the reply.

If you have the time to answer the other questions each one at a time instead of a general reply it would be appreciated.

      Thank you

--As WK-Michael said: If your drive is bad, repairing it isn't going to help.

--If you download DOS-based utilities, this won't be an issue.

          Hello,

I created a dos boot disk from the image at the above link for a seagate drive but cant seem to get the dos to boot. i tried both versions of it and still no luck.

anyone have luck with the seagate check disk download?

any other way to check the drive. it has tivo on it so when i connect it into my computer it can see it but not sure what else i can do with it to check it.

I even used Seagate for Windows and it couldnt find the drive - but the system sees it and show it as no free space. im guessing its becuase its a tivo/linux os?

          thanks

If you can boot in DOS some other way, you can run the software from the inserted disk.

Thanks. I have no idea how to do that. I wonder why the CD didnt work. I know how to create boot images but no luck.

I have XP. Can I boot somehow from DOS? Ever since BIll Gates worked his 'magic' I have no idea about dos!

Sorry - but I don't really know how to help here. You could try booting the CD in another PC to see what happens.
