  • Picture Quality Issues with a Toshiba RS-TX60

    Hi,

I stumbled across this website while researching the issues I'm having with my TIVO. Great website!

Anyways, we have a Toshiba RS-TX60 that is 3 years old. We've been having issues lately with ghost images floating across the screen both when watching live TV and when watching recorded shows (at both medium and high recording qualities). The ghost images can be TIVO screens (like a To Do list), TV screen images (like the logo of a particular show that taped before the show that you're watching taped - e.g., The Biggest Loser logo floating through Jericho), or it can just be dots in lines or waves across the screen. And in a given show, the ghost images can cycle on and off - although they are mostly on.

There obviously several sources. I'd just like to tap some of this boards expertise in troubleshooting this.

1 - Bad cable signal - none of our other TVs have this same issues

2 - Bad connections between Cable wall outlet, TIVO Box, Cable Box, and TV - DH assures me he has checked these and they are fine.

3 - Bad TIVO power supply

4 - Bad TIVO Hard Drive.

Any input on what is the likely source of the problem would be greatly appreciated.

    TIA.

    Ruth

Actually, that sounds like a bad motherboard to me. You could try a new drive, but this sounds like some strange interference on there.

Have you tried this TiVo on another TV just to be sure?

Bad motherboard - that doesn't sound good. Is it repairable without losing the Lifetime TIVO Service? No we haven't tried it on a another TV. I'll suggest that to DH.

      Thanks for your help.

You might want to call TiVo to see if they would move your lifetime service to a comparable unit, the Humax DRT400. The Toshiba units are no longer made. You can also contact Toshiba to see if they can repair the unit, although I'm not sure they are still offering support/repair services.

DH and I were talking about our TIVO issues and the possibility of it actually being the motherboard that's bad. If it is the motherboard, shouldn't we be having issues with the TIVO menus and screens themselves? Everything functions just fine and all of the TIVO screens are perfectly clear. It id only the recordings that have issues....

Thanks for all of your input on this one....

Motherboard issues take all forms, really. We've seen motherboards as the culprits of just a huge variety of problems.

Another issue cropped up with my TIVO unit today. I turned it on and it was locked on a TV image - nothing on the remote would work to change it. I unplugged the unit and plugged it back in. It rebooted but locked up during the TIVO guy video. I unplugged it again and rebooted. This time it made it all the way through reboot and is functioning properly. Is this still likely a motherboard malfunction or is a failing power supply a possibility?

              Any help would be appreciated.

That actually sounds exactly like a bad drive. Maybe you should try a new drive first, and then you can return the drive if it doesn't fix all of the problems.
