Help with Plasma TV purchase

I have two TIVOs that are several years old and not HD compatible. I have a lifetime subscription on both so I want to hold onto them for as long as they work. Is it worth buying an HDTV plasma if I don't have an HD Tivo? Could I still watch DVDs in HD on the new plasma or would my old TIVO block the HD signal entirely? I am really naive about all of this and would apreciate some guidance.

If you had an HD DVD player, that would use a different input and would work just fine in HD alongside your TiVos in SD.
