  • Tivo series 2 with black screen.

    My daughter is away at college and when she came home for Thanksgiving, to watch the programs she missed she discovered that there was no video. No video during live. If I played something that was recorded prior to the screen going black it played well with all the menus being visible. When I try to play one of the programs that was recorded with the black screen it is just about one minute long so it dose not record long with the black screen and I do not get the error message that states no video.
    When I push the Tivo button, the Tivo menu comes up and I can see all as normal only with a black screen in the background. After switching cable boxes, nothing changed until I restarted the Tivo. It worked well for about 10 days and had the same problem. I restarted Tivo again and it worked again for about 7-10 days.
    Does anyone have any ideas? My daughter is going to be home in a couple of weeks and I want to have this solved be fore she gets home. The Tivo is less than a year old.

    Pretty strange. Could your cable box be turning itself off?

      Have tried multiple cable boxes

      No That is what I thought so I changed cable boxes and I have the same problem.

        Maybe the signal strength on the cables is too low? What cable do you use to go from the cable box to the TiVo?

          This has happened to me several in the past. Usually after my digital cable box loses power, power goes off during a storm, or some sort of surge, the box will not come back on the right way. Sometimes it would be a blank screen with no audio, a blank screen with audio, or a program with no audio. I think it's more your cable provider's equipment than the TiVo itself.

            Sounds right. Sounds like you should both be asking your cable providers for new set top boxes.

              Screw that. I'm getting a cable card for my new Series3 on Monday. The cable box is as good as gone.
