I have a Toshiba RS-TX20 that was ordered through weaknees with a 300GB HD upgrade about two years ago.
Overall I'm happy with the TiVo... all of the hard drive-based functions work perfectly. But the reliability of getting a successful burn has dropped to zero over the past couple months.
The DVD drive works fine for playback, but when I try to burn a disk it will sometimes fail after sitting at "0% SAVED" for several minutes or at times reaching as far as 70-80% before it fails with an "internal error." I use TDK disks virtually exclusively and I have access to several different production batches, all of which had at one time delivered consistently good results. I've burned at least two to three hundred disks with this unit so far.
I had read on the TiVo Communiy fora that if the free space on the hard drive drops too low that this can cause problems with burns because it needs to create an image of the disk on the drive before burning and it needs about 5GB of contiguous space to do that. If the drive gets too full, then this space isn't available and deleting programs to free up space doesn't always help because it's often not contiguous and the system doesn't provide for defragmenting.
I have used the diagnostic mode also decribed in the TiVo Community forum where you remove power, wait for the DVD light to come on, press and hold PAUSE until both the HD & DVD light turn orange and then pressing 5 7. This will eventually produce a green diagnostic screen that says the TiVo has suffered a serious disk error and will attempt to continue booting. I had done this many times with success early on, but recent attempts to use it have been ineffective.
I keep track of my drive space usage using TiVoPlayList so I know what's on the drive and have cleaned out a lot of stuff that I don't want to save for burning.
I'm at my wits end. Is there anything I can do myself to help fix this? I don't think my family could survive if I returned the unit for repair!
Are there utilities I can run myself to defrag or otherwise maintain my drive?
Thanks! strider
