  • HD Comparisons

Sorry if this has been posted... I looked in the forums and the FAQs and didn't see it.

I am going to be buying one of Weaknees' HD Tivos, and have looked at the comparison between the TivoHD and the Series 3 ones. Not having seen opinion on this, it seems that the Series 3 are far superior. Am I missing something or is this the general consensus?

I have my current Series 2 Tivo hooked up with the wireless... will the same wireless card work with the HD tivo I get?

Also, any thoughts as to what I'd do with my Series 2 Weaknees TiVo? It is like 160GB and it can hold quite a bit. Is there an active resale market for this, and, if so, is there a deactivation issue or anything?

Thanks, and forgive a newbie if this has been posted before.

For the old unit, eBay is the best answer.

As far as the wireless, if it's a TiVo Wireless G, it'll work. That's the only WiFI adapter that works on the HD units.

And for the big question about which unit to get, you're generally right. The Series3 is much nicer. To be honest, the main reason people get the other unit is that it is a bit less expensive, and before the rebate started on the S3s, it was a lot cheaper.

      HD

Ok, one more question... if I buy the HD box now but don't have the HD TV yet, I assume it will work? I am having big problems with the TiVo not communicating well with the cable box and a lot of not channel changes (nothing more frustrating). I'd love to get the TiVo and get those Cable Cards going even before I buy the TV (slated for January, post holidays). Does that work?

Yes, you can get the HD unit working even if you don't have an HDTV.

          Series 3 vs HD

I have 2 Series 2 and want to upgrade to(2) a new HD Tivo and be able to assign my lifetime service. Right now only the new dual tuner HD is available for this offer: $299+$199 for assignment. I called Tivo-HD specialist today to ask what are the real differences. This is what I was told:
          1-Capacity
2-Series 3 Supports THX audio (New HD supports Dolby Digital 5:1)
3-Cable cards access from rear instead of from front.
4-Series 3 offers new learning remote.
          5-Series 3 provides HDMI cable.
All other specifications and capabilities are the same.
Also told that TivoToGo and MRV software updates are going to released next month. Therefore, all Series 2 functions will be provided with both HDs.
They told me to check out Western Digitals new Mobile Remote DVR Expansion Drive. This will also be supported with the software update. It is 500GB/7200RPM/E-Sata connection to both HDs. (60 hours of HD)Pricing for this varies from $145 to $199. Seems like a great add on.
If all of this is true, and I didn't care about THX and the remote; why would one purchase the Series 3 if you already had lifetime with the Series 2 and wanted to upgrade to HD? Am I missing something?
          Thanks for all feedback.

Basically, since the current lifetime service transfer deal only works with the TiVo HD then that's the unit to get in your situation.

If you aren't doing a transfer, then the Series3 makes sense since, after rebate, it's the same price for a comparably sized unit.

I'd MUCH rather buy the Series 3, but with the lifetime transfer restricted to the Tivo HD, I'm forced to go that route. If someone knows differently please msg me and save me from making a mistake!!

As far as we know, the current program is restricted to the TiVo HD. We've had customers try other units to no avail.

JBK224 was told Series 3 offers new learning remote. I have a year-old S3, but the remote that came with it does not have a learning ability, as far as I know. Did TIVO come out with a universal/learning remote for the S3?

Nope - they all have the same one. Do you have the instruction manual?

I found programming instructions on the Tivo forums. Thanks.
